THE ARK-530A, A NEW PRODUCT FROM Marco's line of automated refractors/keratometers, offers several enhanced features from other ARKs, such as advanced Super Luminescent Diode (SLD), which makes measurements of cataracts and IOLs possible, the company says.

The ARK-530A is fully automated when aligning, tracking, and focusing on the patient's eye, insuring for reliable and repeatable data for refractive and keratometry measurements. The ARK-530A allows the operator to take peripheral keratometric measurements, including sagittal radius and eccentricity values used in corneal evaluations for contact lens fitting and refractive surgery evaluations.

Other features of the ARK-530A include the ability to compare the auto-re-   fraction to either the unaided view or the lens meter, if connected. The ARK- 530A can compare the auto-refraction with or without ADD power, a valuable tool for near vision screenings, the company says.

New Tool Measures Corneal Properties

REICHERT OPHTHALMIC INSTRUMENTS" Ocular Response Analyzer offers the first direct measure of corneal biomechanical properties, the company says. The new measurement, called corneal hysteresis, indicates the overall integrity of the cornea, Reichert says, which can provide more complete information than central corneal thickness.

It can also aid in the diagnosis of corneal disease and pre-screen for refractive surgery procedures. In using this information the Ocular Response Analyzer is able to present IOPcc, a new measure of intraocular pressure that compares with Goldmann on average, but is less affected by corneal properties, such as elasticity, the company says.

The Reichert Ocular Analyzer also includes a built-in ultrasound pachymeter and a patient-management database. For more information, call (716) 686-4500, or visit ocularresponse-analyzer.com or reichertoi.com.

Alcon's DisCoVisc: New Type of OVD

ALCON REPORTS THAT ITS DISCOVISC Ophthalmic Viscosurgical Device (OVD) is the first viscous dispersive and the first viscoelastic optimized for the entire surgical procedure. This new category of OVD offers the protective benefits normally associated with a dispersive category product, along with the space maintenance and easy removal of a cohesive-type product, Alcon says.

During a Food and Drug Administration clinical study, the combination of sodium chondroitin sulfate and sodium hyaluronate in the product demonstrated superior results during virtually all phases of the cataract procedure. The product is packaged in a 1-mL, latex-free syringe.

Redesigned Volk Super Macula

VOLK OPTICAL"S REDESIGNED Super Macula 2.2 lens delivers the same detailed views in a lighter, smaller lens, the company reports. The lens's high resolution and wide field of view are ideal for critical evaluation of the optic nerve head and macula, according to Volk.

The Super Macula 2.2 provides high-resolution treatment capability of lesions near the fovea. The indirect contact lens magnifies the treatment area and delivers a smaller laser spot for precise focal grid laser treatment. The wide, 78-degree field of view and stereopsis provide detailed views of the macula and disk, the company says.

The design of the Super Macula 2.2 reduces its weight and size for more convenient handling, and its double-aspheric glass construction gives bright, undistorted images across the entire lens surface.

Femtosecond Laser Cleared by FDA

THE FDA HAS CLEARED THE DA-Vinci Femtosecond Surgical Laser System for the U.S. market, Switzerland-based Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems AG announced in March.

The DaVinci Femtosecond Surgical Laser, the company's flagship product, was launched last fall at the American Academy of Ophthalmology convention in Chicago, and is now available for purchase and clinical use in the majority of ophthalmic markets in the Western world. The laser uses a new laser technology to generate shorter, smaller, lower-energy infrared laser pulses that dissect corneal tissue with smoothness and precision, says Ziemer.

Workstation Helps Manage Data

THE ORK WORKSTATION SYSTEM from Schwind combines a topography system, for measurement of corneal wavefront, and the aberrometer, for the measurement of ocular wavefront, at one workstation, simplifying workflow for both doctor and patient, the company says.

A doctor can manage data measurement with both devices from one Panel-PC, and the patient merely changes chin rests. The ORK Workstation offers a compact design and with a wireless LAN connection, the measurement data can be printed without a cable.
