Ocusoft announced the
availability of Retaine MGD Ophthalmic Emulsion, a new therapy for individuals suffering from dry-eye syndrome and meibomian gland dysfunction.

Retaine MGD is the only preservative-free, oil-in-water emulsion that moisturizes, lubricates and protects moderate to severe dry eyes. Utilizing Novasorb Technology—a proprietary cationic process of binding positively charged ions to the negatively charged ocular surface, Retaine MGD prolongs corneal contact time resulting in enhanced comfort, the company says. The hypotonicity of the emulsion adds moisture by lowering the salt concentration of tears while the lipid component lubricates and protects the surface of the eye.

Retaine MGD is packaged in 30 single-dose vials and will be the first product in a complete line of Retaine brand artificial tears. With the addition of Retaine to its portfolio of products, Ocusoft will provide practitioners with a complete selection of therapies to treat ocular surface disease.

Special discount pricing is available to doctors dispensing from their office, however, patients may also order online directly at retainebrand.com. For more information, visit ocusoft.com/retainemgd or call 1 (800) 233-5469.

From Aviso: A ModularUltrasound Platform
Quantel USA says its Aviso ultrasound platform offers the widest choice of probe frequencies in the market from conventional 10MHz to high-frequency anterior and posterior segment probes for diagnostic needs including: refractive surgery; corneal diseases; glaucoma management; vitreoretinal diseases; intraocular tumors; and biometry and intraocular lens calculation.

Aviso’s proprietary 50 MHz linear scanning UBM probe reveals what you cannot see with OCT alone. This high-frequency, linear technology allows the operator to see structures located behind the iris such as the ciliary bodies, the processes and lens zonules. Linear scanning offers the greatest signal intensity by constantly being perpendicular to the ocular structures, providing anterior chamber image quality far superior to any other UBM on the market. UBM linear technology is also available in a 25-MHz probe for anterior chamber imaging and cataract specialists.

Aviso’s newest version of software includes a glaucoma module offering semi-automated quantifying tools for angle and iris measurements.
Aviso is also available in a high-frequency 20-MHz mode for posterior segment imaging; biometry for axial length measurement and IOL calculation; and advanced mode for standardized echography, fully complying to Karl Ossoinig’s requirements.

Aviso’s high-resolution digital imaging incorporates a high signal-to-noise ratio to differentiate the finest ocular structures, and also offers a high quality image standard at any zoom factor used during diagnosis.

DICOM and EMR options make the Aviso easy to network and download the patient database. For information, call 1 (888) 660 6726 or visit  quantel-medical.com.

Fera Pharmaceuticals Brings Back Sulfacetamide
Fera Pharmaceuticals has launched Sulfacetamide Sodium Ophthalmic Ointment USP, 10%. Indicated for superficial ocular infections, including conjunctivitis, sulfacetamide, in ointment form, will be an important addition to physicians’ treatment armamentarium.

The company points out that ointments have the advantage of maintaining eye contact time longer, particularly in pediatric patients whose tears may inadvertently wash drops out from the eye. In addition, sulfacetamide ointment is an important treatment adjunct to the solution, especially at nighttime. “Bringing Sulfacetamide Sodium Ophthalmic Ointment to market is very much in keeping with Fera’s vision” says Frank DellaFera, president. “There were other such products available years ago, but their manufacturers decided to discontinue them. We listened to the market place and brought it back.”

FDA Clearance for Nidek Automated Fundus Camera
Nidek announced the FDA 510(k) clearance for its AFC-330 third-generation automated fundus camera. The AFC-330 makes quantum leaps improving the operator and patient interface, simplicity, automation and total practice efficiencies, Nidek says. The camera offers an all-in-one compact design, auto alignment on the X-Y-Z axis, and a wide range of automated features including auto stereo for glaucoma management. The lower flash intensity and sound-dampening internal movements mean fewer retakes and improved patient comfort.

While Nidek will continue to sell to the ophthalmology market in the United States, Marco will sell the instrument in the optometry market. For information, visit nidek.com.

Mount Your iPad Wherever You Work
SpiderArm Ltd. has launched its SpiderArm accessory line with its premier Quick Release Mounts, for use with all generations of the iPad. CooperVision Debuts One Day Disposable Multifocal
CooperVision has launched Proclear one day multifocal daily disposable contact lenses, which provide presbyopic patients with excellent vision at all distances and address age-related dryness, the company says.

Proclear one day multifocal lenses offer the convenience of a daily disposable lens for the full-time or occasional wearer, along with all-day comfort and high performance for patients who want an overall, more natural visual experience.

The center-near aspheric design and simplified fitting approach make it easier to select the right lens for patients in all stages of presbyopia—whether they are emerging or existing presbyopes. Proclear 1 day multifocal lenses are offered in a broad power range and are designed with a single power profile. With the use of a near boost in the non-dominant eye, the lens can accommodate patients up to +2.50 ADD.
