Rapid Pathogen Screening has announced that the American Medical Association has issued a new CPT code that will cover the RPS Adeno Detector, effective January 1, 2008. CPT Code 87809—a code for "Infectious agent antigen detection by immunoassay with direct optical observation; Adenovirus"—will cover the RPS Adeno Detector, the first true point-of-care test available for conjunctivitis. Cleared by the Food and Drug Administration, this test is highly sensitive and specific, and it provides a definitive result in 10 minutes, the company says. The publication of this CPT code will expand the use of the RPS Adeno Detector and equip health-care providers with this necessary tool to make an accurate laboratory confirmation of adenoviral conjunctivitis at the time of the patient exam.

The RPS Adeno Detector is the first in a family of RPS point-of-care diagnostic devices. As a rapid, in-office, immunodiagnostic test for detecting the presence of adenoviral antigens, the RPS Adeno Detector meets the criteria established within the October 2006 Preferred Practice Pattern on Conjunctivitis from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Same Features, Smaller Size

EyeQuip has introduced the Piccolo Corneal Topographer (joining the Scout and the original Keratron) as the third addition to the Keratron Topographer line. The Piccolo Topographer offers the same software features as the larger Keratron and Scout topographers, but in a much smaller form. Designed to mount on most slit lamps, the Piccolo has advanced miniaturization technology with extreme reliability and accuracy at a very competitive price, the maker reports. The Piccolo connects to any recent Windows computer and includes free networking.

Included are: standard maps such as Corneal Wave Front; auto-capture; keratoconus detection; spherical aberration measurement; repeatability check; free software updates and networking and Wave Contact Lens Design Software. (Wave lens fitters qualify for rebates equal to the Piccolo purchase price). For information contact Scott Lewis, 1 (800) 393-8676, or visit eyequip.com.

Reti Eye: An Educational Time-Saver

Gulden Ophthalmics says its new Reti Eye is an extremely useful system in kit form for ophthalmic practitioners to practice indirect ophthalmoscopy and photocoagulation. The Reti Eye device comprises two halves—the upper half includes a lens; the lower half houses replaceable retinal films that show vascularization and the optic nerve. The kit includes the Reti Eye, a wooden base, 10 retinal films and an adjustable clamp for slit lamp mounting.

For indirect ophthalmoscopy practice, the Reti Eye is placed on the wood base and rotated for a clear view of the fundus. During photocoagulation practice, tiny white spots form on the retinal film when using a green photocoagulation laser. The model is realistically colored and textured and is ideally designed for education and practice. Additional films are readily available from Gulden.
