Allergan has expanded its Optive brand line with the addition of Optive Sensitive Preservative-Free Lubricant Eye Drops, an over-the-counter artificial tear for patients suffering from dry eye or dryness following LASIK surgery. Allergan says the Optive line of artificial tears offers a unique dual-action formula that works both on the ocular surface and at the cellular level to provide long-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.

In a 30-day, randomized controlled trial of 316 dry-eye patients, 157 patients who received Optive Sensitive Preservative-Free eye drops demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in six common signs and symptoms of dry eye when compared to their prior experience with Refresh Plus.

In addition, a 90-day randomized controlled trial of 228 post-LASIK surgery patients revealed patients who used Optive and had undergone LASIK surgery experienced less ocular surface staining at two weeks after surgery when compared to patients who used Refresh Plus. Moreover, the trial revealed a statistically significant improvement from baseline in patients' evaluation of dry-eye symptoms.

Optive Sensitive is available in unit-dose (single use) vials. Allergan's Optive brand products can be found at retail locations where OTC eye-care products are sold. Ziemwe Module for Corneal Femto Surgery

Ziemer Group has released the Lamellar Corneal Surgery Module for the Femto LDV femtosecond surgical laser. The module, which is available as an optional accessory for new and previously installed LDV systems, includes a newly designed hand-piece that allows for cutting depths from 250 to 450 µm and features a built-in camera for precise centering. The geometry of tunnel and pocket patterns can be constructed by the user via an intuitive graphical user interface and allows for maximum flexibility in the design of dissection patterns. Patterns can be centered after suction has been established and under direct visual control.

With the superior tissue dissection performance provided by the high-speed, low-pulse energy, small-spot femtolaser technology of the Femto LDV and with new optics optimized for deeper stromal incisions, Zeimer says the Femto LDV system now delivers unique flexibility and unparalleled performance for creating circular tunnel incisions for intracorneal rings, stromal pockets for corneal inlays, and for lamellar keratoplasty procedures.
