The goal of Review of Ophthalmology is to provide highly pertinent, practical advice and information to ophthalmologists in an easily accessible format.
We ask our authors to keep this in mind when they agree to publish an article with the magazine as the style we use is unique to our publication. Please keep in mind that all articles will undergo an extensive editing process so that the tone of the article meshes with our goal of a user-friendly publication. However, the editors will always strive to preserve the author’s accuracy and “voice” during the editing process.
A Few General Guidelines for Review Articles:
• Feature and Clinical Articles Lengths. The majority of feature articles cover three to four pages in the magazine. This translates to approximately 1,500 to 2,500 words, depending on the number of figures you plan to submit with the manuscript. If you feel your topic needs to be longer, please do not feel limited by this length.
• Column Lengths. If you are writing a single page column, the length should be no more than 800 words. If you are writing a two-page clinical column, the length should be no more than 1,200 words.
• References. If possible, all clinical articles should be referenced or accompanied by a suggested list for further reading. For Feature Articles, please limit the number of references to 50. For Clinical Columns (including Glaucoma Management and Retinal Insider), please limit the number of references to 25.
How to Write an Article or Column for Review:
Do work from an outline. Most clinical or business articles use one of two organizations. The first is chronological, in which the author tells the reader what to do first, second and third. The second is topical, in which the author addresses a number of topics individually (as in, 10 ways to achieve optimal staff productivity).
Do explore each point thoroughly.
Do write in a conversational style, as though you are having a chat with a colleague. Include personal anecdotes and clinical pearls whenever possible.
Do not be afraid to use the words “I,” “We,” or “You.” These words help to personalize the article and make it easier to read and understand.
Do keep the article as practical and easy to understand as possible.
Figures and Illustrations:
Do include photos, illustrations and/or charts to accompany the article. If you plan to send digitized clinical illustrations, please save them as a “TIFF” file. We will return all artwork after publication.
Do include figure captions. Also label figures for proper orientation and, where appropriate, indicate where figures belong in the text.
How to Submit Your Article:
Articles should be submitted via e-mail. We work on Macintoshes but can convert nearly any Windows-based file. Articles and illustrations should be sent to the attention of the editor you are working with at the following address:

If you are writing about a specific product or class of products, please disclose whether you have any financial interest in the product or if you have a consulting agreement with the manufacturer.
We also offer you the option of having your article written by a staff member. This involves scheduling one to two phone interviews, after which the editor will prepare a draft of the article for your review. In some cases, this may be the most expedient way to complete an article if time is a concern.
